Abstract

This paper examines the potential of indigenous language films as a means of representation and identity for the diverse cultures across the Nigerian landscape. The study undertakes a critical assessment of the misrepresentation of the Tiv people of Benue State, Nigeria, in Tiv language films, examining it as an impediment to effective representation and identity. The study employs a qualitative research method, using content analysis and Focused Group Discussion (FGD) as instruments of data collection and analysis, and adopts the Cultural Norms Theory as its framework. Findings reveal that vital aspects of Tiv culture (folklore, customs, traditions, beliefs, language, dressing, food and eating habits, etc.) are misrepresented in some Tiv indigenous language films. The study concludes that it behoves the Tiv indigenous filmmakers to utilize film as a tool to represent, promote and preserve their beliefs and cultural practices for posterity. This study thus contributes to the conversations and scholarship on effective cultural representation, promotion and preservation of indigenous cultures and identity from extinction, particularly through research.
