An Arts-Based Approach to Comprehensive Sexuality Education with School-Going Adolescents in Malawi
Abstract
This chapter examines an arts-based Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) project titled “Promoting sexual and reproductive health education among adolescents through active and youth-led practice in India, Malawi, and Uganda,” funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). In Malawi, the project was implemented in two public secondary schools, Mulunguzi and Masongola, located in the Zomba District, southern Malawi. A collaborative initiative between the University of Leeds and the University of Malawi, the project spanned one academic school year (nine months) and involved pupils in Forms One and Two. We reflect on the project&s;s methodological and pedagogical approach to determine whether engaging young people in sexuality education through arts-based methodologies can equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to lead sexually safe lives and make informed, long-term decisions that contribute to improved health outcomes, gender equality, and transformed social norms.
