Abstract

This chapter argues that the nature of the current conceptualization and operational frameworks that anchor the African university, in principle desensitises the university from meaningfully committing to identifying, appreciating and addressing the challenges of its social environment, especially the increasing gender and xenophobic violence. The chapter shows how the market ideology that has captured and inheres higher education is resulting in the invisibility of gender violence in the pedagogical, research, and management arenas of the university. Unless the university ultimately centres locality as legitimate objects of academic research and pedagogy, the African university will not only fail to achieve democratic transformation of its host societies, but will continue tacitly colluding in reproducing different structures of violence.
