Abstract

IoT continues to be one of the recent leading technologies whose widespread popularity has influenced its worldwide deployment. IoT can be used to create solutions in respective communities e.g. the sustainable development goals. Its implementation in developing countries, however, presents its own set of problems that need to be taken into consideration by stakeholders of a given IoT system, such as weather conditions, implementation and maintenance costs as well as deployment location and equipment security. This short paper ponders upon the challenges that were met in the deployment of an IoT based city wide waste management system in Lilongwe city. The system, using solar powered particle electrons, had trash-cans locally deployed to monitor trash level and alert appropriate authorities.
