Community Arts from the Margins

Abstract

In this volume, the term community arts is used as a strategic umbrella term encompassing a diverse range of practices, including Theatre for Development (TfD), Theatre of the Oppressed, art-based activism, Forum Theatre, Theatre in Education (TIE), Drama in Education (DIE), Playback Theatre, storytelling, and folk media. This volume, Community Arts from the Margins , explores socially engaged art-based practices created with and by marginalised communities. The book focuses primarily on practitioners working in the Global South and speaking to one another. While two of the authors—Alistair Campbell and Matthew Elliott—are originally from the UK, the practices, ideologies, and pedagogical foundations of all contributors, without exception, are deeply shaped by a specific lineage of practice that emerged in the Global South.
