Theatre and Media for Social Change in Malawi

Abstract

Mental health awareness and stigma reduction are critical challenges faced by many African communities, including those in Malawi. Despite gradual progress, misconceptions about mental health conditions and their causes remain prevalent, often leading to discrimination and barriers to seeking help ( Crabb, Stewart and Kokota, 2012 ). Different approaches are needed to promote mental health literacy and ensure more supportive community attitudes. Theatre for Development (TfD), a participatory theatre approach rooted in the work of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal, has emerged as one of the tools for addressing social issues and stimulating community dialogue across Africa ( Kerr, 1995 ).
