Abstract
Introduction: Dietary intake assessments are carried out to get information on people’s dietary patterns, nutrient intakes, sources of nutrients and food habits. Policy makers use this information to design, implement, monitor and evaluate food programs and other nutrition related policies. Objectives: To determine the relative validity of an interactive 24-hour dietary recall in assessing energy and nutrient intake for 16-month old children. Methods: A dietary intake assessment was done on the same day for the same subjects using weighed food record (WFR) and structured interactive 24 hour dietary recall methods. A total of 169, 16 months old children participating in a 12-month complementary feeding clinical trial participated in this validation study. Results: There was a good agreement between the structured interactive 24-hour recall method and the weighed food record when assessing mean energy and nutrient intake values indicating relative validity of the structured interactive 24-hour recall method. The structured interactive 24-hour recall method can also be used as a dietary tool to classify individuals into groups meeting different levels of energy and nutrient intakes. Conclusion and Recommendations: The structured interactive 24-hourr recall method can be used instead of the weighed food record to assess energy and nutrient intake for 16 month old children in rural Malawi.
