Abstract
Over the last decade, the telecommunication industry has been an emerging and important economic sector with immense impacts on the social and economic structures of Malawi. Despite some entry of new providers the industry is still concentrated and there are fears of collusive pricing. This study uses panel data for the period 2004 to 2014 for four mobile telecommunications operators to investigate the determinants of market power in the industry using the Lerner Index and Cost Price Mark-up and operator-specific, industry-specific and macroeconomic factors as determinant variables. The findings suggest that market power is positively influenced by low market penetration and foreign exchange fluctuations but negatively influence market concentration.
